The Treatment

Target Audience: Basement beats is a music magazine aimed at females who enjoy urban, hip-hop and dance music. Its reader is aged between 15 and 19 years of age but may also be read by those who work part-time in the music industry who would obviously be older than the main audience. But because of the young age range, these readers would fall into the socioeconomic groups C1/C2, due to them relying on their parents for finance. Or, they may be able to finance there small luxuries through earning in a part-time/weekend job. The readers of Basement Beats have a passion for music and take a keen interest in those artists who can relate to the issues that these girls go through in everyday life whether it be, love, money or struggles at school. They prefer being able to relate to the song lyrics of those bands and are very interested in the various performances and interviews they take part in so therefore are grateful for having a magazine like Basement Beats.

Form and Style: Basement Beats is an A5 colour magazine that highlights the talents of both successful and up and coming groups and singers. It includes key advice to following your dream through entertainment and is filled with interviews with platinum selling artists. Covers often have their featured interviewee on the front as well as small articles that may appeal to their audience. The colour schemes use blues, blacks, purples and silvers to stand out from the rest of the magazine. With a catchy title and cover, the magazine isn’t cluttered and clearly shows what the reader wants to know. At a price of just £1.90 it is both desirable and affordable.

Themes and Typical features: Basement Beats will have regular interviews, advice and photos as well as reviewing the latest singles, movies and answering any questions the readers may send in. The writers will use language that includes euphemisms so that it appeals to the appropriate age range.

A range of different brands will place their adverts in the magazine each week. Particularly those with an interest in the music industry such as; Virgin, HMV, Ticketmaster, as well as others that appeal to their market in general such as clothing lines or make up brands.

Editorial Team: The editorial team of Basement Beats will include a mix of experienced writers as well as those in their early twenties but will also be mostly female dominate. Each issue will provide the readers with a chance of contributing to the magazine, whether it be through competition winners, answering questions or by letters they send in to voice their opinions on matters. The aim will be to bring fresh ideas to the magazine each week and involve a range of ages to produce the most interesting magazine in the market.

Masthead – just the letter “Q” white and red, very simple but bold. Unique design. Brand identity includes the masthead which easily recognisable and distinguished to the target audience.

The banner states it’s most appealing article –a feature on Coldplay. They are the main focus of the magazine as they are the only representation of Artists on the front cover.

The price is stated by the barcode in the bottom right hand corner as well as the date – in this case July 2008 issue of “q” magazine is priced at £3.90

The contents page is divided up into two columns, giving a clear understanding of where you can find this months most appealing features. Below is advice as to where you can find subjects that are featured every month such as “q-mail” and the crossword. The text is bold and black in colour and you able to read it quite clearly. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

•The key ingredients of a student magazine include a vast amount of enticing graphics and photos to grab there attention. Topics have to be balanced between educational facts and interesting articles that involve their age group otherwise interest will be lost by the first page.
•A contents page should be kept short and simple and not involve too much information so it allows the reader to develop an interest and read on. If the headlines and captions grab their eye then they’ll be more likely to buy your magazine again. I believe that my own magazine appeals to a variety of students and stands out above the rest. Bright cover lines and features make it great for students to read

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

•“New Mag On The Block” is a student magazine, aimed at those between the ages of 15 and 18. It is easier to represent this age group due to the stereotypical concepts they conform to. I have tried to break away from the typical titles that are associated with this age group but it has proven more difficult than I originally thought. When research was completed, the teens of Ludlow showed that they enjoyed, drinking, going out, gossip, fashion and were interested in job-hunting. The wants of the consumer has to be taken into consideration for it is the main reason of producing a student magazine that will sell well so my magazine includes the above categories and many more that’ll entice students throughout the college.
