Basment Beats - Final Draft

Basment Beats Front Cover - Draft 4

This fourth draft was designed so that the image was still clearly visible but so that several lines of text were centred and easy to read at the bottom of the page. I did not want to over-complicate the page and confuse the readers with an array of themes colours and texts so have decided to keep the colour scheme the same but vary the style of the font on each line.

Basement Beat Cover Page - Draft 3

On my third draft I focused upon getting the right feature artist to grace the cover. I wanted to take a photo of someone who was very current on the R'n'B scene; so decided to do by attending a concert where I could get close to the artist. This shot is full length and on stage, so different lighting effecrs created a great atmosphere in which the photo was taken. I decided to keep it to an absolute minimum as far as details were concerned which was influenced by the covers og "Q" magazine.

Double - Page Spread

Here is my final draft for my double page spread. I have decided upon using a photo that shows the artist relaxed at home which is where the interview is conducted. It shows a relaxed atmosphere and how he his willing to welcome his fans into his life through images of his home. The lighting is bright and have placed "JJ" slightly to the left of the shot to ensure you can see the guitar and amplifier as this is realted to what he states in the article.

Second Draft Of Double Page Spread

Final Draft Of Contents Page

Third Draft Of Contents Page

Each contents page I have edited the varying texts and contemplated using different photos in each edition. I have decided to use the current layout of the page for my final draft but after publishing it I have realised thatthe text would look better curved around the image.

First Draft Of Contents Page

Here I have my first draft of my contents page. I've focused on the context which relates to the artists featured later on in the magazine. They style of the text is " Bring tha noise" which is a light graffiti font. The photos feature on this page have all been taken by myself at various concerts over the past year. It shows the artists in action and gives the audience a chance to experience them in a different light. The text is kept light-hearted and simple enough so that it doesn't over crowd the first page.

Front Cover

For my front cover, I intend to get my main act out there and in the lime light by only using a picture of them on the front cover. I'd like to keep it bold with the statement title at the top and the price at the bottom. Too much information will detract from the artist/artists and will not grab the attention of the target audience which is what we are aiming for. With the hottest band/artisits on the cover, it will instantly stand out against over music magazines out there.

The readers of Basement Beats have a passion for music and take a keen interest in those artists who can relate to the issues that these girls go through in everyday life whether it be, love, money or struggles at school. They prefer being able to relate to the song lyrics of those bands and are very interested in the various performances and interviews they take part in so therefore are grateful for having a magazine like Basement Beats.

Form and Style: Basement Beats is an A5 colour magazine that highlights the talents of both successful and up and coming groups and singers. It includes key advice to following your dream through entertainment and is filled with interviews with platinum selling artists. The colour schemes use blues, blacks, purples and silvers to stand out from the rest of the magazine. With a catchy title and cover, the magazine isn’t cluttered and clearly shows what the reader wants to know. At a price of just £1.90 it is both desirable and affordable.

Themes and Typical features: Basement Beats will have regular interviews, advice and photos as well as reviewing the latest singles, movies and answering any questions the readers may send in. The writers will use language that includes euphemisms so that it appeals to the appropriate age range.

Textual Analysis

Textual Analysis - “Q Magazine”

Masthead – just the letter “Q” white and red, very simple but bold. Unique design. Brand identity includes the masthead which easily recognisable and distinguished to the target audience.

The banner states it’s most appealing article –a feature on Coldplay. They are the main focus of the magazine as they are the only representation of Artists on the front cover.

The price is stated by the barcode in the bottom right hand corner as well as the date – in this case July 2008 issue of “q” magazine is priced at £3.90

The contents page is divided up into two columns, giving a clear understanding of where you can find this months most appealing features. Below is advice as to where you can find subjects that are featured every month such as “q-mail” and the crossword. The text is bold and black in colour and you able to read it quite clearly. To the tight of the column, you see a medium length shot of another artist featured this month, showing you the diversity of music tastes the magazine offers.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

•The key ingredients of a student magazine include a vast amount of enticing graphics and photos to grab there attention. Topics have to be balanced between educational facts and interesting articles that involve their age group otherwise interest will be lost by the first page.
•A contents page should be kept short and simple and not involve too much information so it allows the reader to develop an interest and read on. If the headlines and captions grab their eye then they’ll be more likely to buy your magazine again. I believe that my own magazine appeals to a variety of students and stands out above the rest. Bright cover lines and features make it great for students to read

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

•“New Mag On The Block” is a student magazine, aimed at those between the ages of 15 and 18. It is easier to represent this age group due to the stereotypical concepts they conform to. I have tried to break away from the typical titles that are associated with this age group but it has proven more difficult than I originally thought. When research was completed, the teens of Ludlow showed that they enjoyed, drinking, going out, gossip, fashion and were interested in job-hunting. The wants of the consumer has to be taken into consideration for it is the main reason of producing a student magazine that will sell well so my magazine includes the above categories and many more that’ll entice students throughout the college.
